The Nipigon Public Library

The history of the Nipigon Public Library and the librarians employed by this library began in the early months of 1958.  Downstairs under Thompson's Drug Store, a small collection of books and a small space for the first Librarian, Mrs. B. Rushton, was made.  Within a year, Mrs. Rushton was succeeded by Mrs. L. Heald.

Over the years, the Nipigon Public Library collection expanded and more room was required.  With government assistance, the library was relocated on May, 1967 to a larger building that still houses the collection today.  The first librarian in this newly renovated location was Mrs. A. Donaldson.  The grand opening of the Centennial Library was August 16, 1967.  In 1969, Mrs. J. Scott became the fourth librarian.  In 1972, Miss B. Brill took over the position for the next eleven years.  For a short time, Mrs. M. Epple became the sixth librarian.  She was succeeded by Mrs. K. Jubinville in 1984.  Miss K. Matheson was the eighth librarian from 1991 to 1997.  Tracy Zurich succeeded her for two years.  She also instigated our first Goods, Services and Talents Auction (GST fundraiser).  The tenth and current librarian is Sumiye Sugawara (1999- ).  From December 2001 to December 2002, Barbara Walker was the acting 11th librarian - replacing Sumiye who was on maternity leave.

Throughout the years, the Nipigon Public Library has grown and continues to grow through the assistance of the Federal, Municipal and Provincial governments.

Since the mid 1970's, the library has hired summer students through the Federally funded "Challenge" grant, Provincial "Experience" grant and the "Shell Environment Fund".    The Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Recreation has made funds available for library equipment and provided professional support and services to supplement the library collection through Ontario Library Services - North (OLS-N).  Most recently, the Community Access Program (CAP) has provided funding for computers, printers,  a scanner and youth workers to help assist people using computers and the internet.  NW Conx graciously provides our library with Internet access.

The Library collection is continually expanding and is weeded regularly to keep it current.  The collection is also supplemented with many other materials including videos, talking books, music and magazines.  In an effort to keep current with new technology, public access computers and Internet services are available.  In May of 2004 we proudly launched our automation system.  The library catalogue is now available over the internet at http://216.211.30.60/.

The Township of Nipigon has a library of which to be proud.
